Unlike traditional Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), which focuses on the analysis of individual organisms, metagenomic NGS (mNGS) must accurately distinguish between microbial, host and other contaminating genetic material. Moreover, because of the relatively small number of microbial reads compared to host reads, databases must be carefully constructed otherwise computational errors may result in misinterpretation of mNGS data.
